Innovation refers to the notion of doing something different rather than doing the same thing better, do you consider yourself a risk taker when it comes to the design of new flood defence innovations?
I am not a risk taker as far as design goes, but I am a risk taker in life. Throughout history, people with new ideas - who think differently and try to change things - have always been called troublemakers.
How do you spot opportunities for innovation?
Innovation cannot be spotted, it grabs you at 3 o’clock in the morning and won’t let you go until you get up and make it a drink and begin to create it. Be open to change at all times, mankind hasn’t thought of everything. Every day is a new opportunity to make things better.
What do you think is the key to being a successful innovative organisation?
The ability to change and not follow the crowd, speed of reaction and the determination to succeed. Innovation is light, so you must keep moving towards it.
What do you consider as your biggest motivation to deliver new innovations in flood mitigation?
A new market, a new challenge and a fun day at the office!
