Flood Protection: Capel Bangor & Penrhyncoch, Wales

A bespoke Flood Angel® Flood Defender™ Barrier to a front doorway

CLIENT

EA Wales

THE PROBLEM

The flood chaos that descended on mid Wales in the summer of 2012 was highly documented in the media. Reports claim residents only had a few minutes to leave their properties as rivers burst their banks creating a strong current running through the villages. Capel Bangor and Penrhyncoch, small communities in the County of Ceredigion were affected by the floods.

News reported Penrhyncoch was among the worst affected with waterlogged homes and residents stranded on upper levels. Capel Bangor also suffered from surface water flooding.

It was days later when the results of the flooding really hit home for the locals, roads were out of use, schools closed and many villages cut off within the county. However, the community spirit and hard work in the clean-up operation was highly commended by local authorities

THE SOLUTION

Environment Agency (EA) Wales announced plans for flood mitigation measures to 22 properties in Capel Bangor and Penrhyncoch. Surveys were completed and measurements sent to three potential companies to undertake the work. UK Flood Barriers were awarded the project.

Working closely with Gareth Richards, Project Manager at the EA Wales, UKFB completed pre manufacturing surveys to specify the best combination of mitigation measures to use for each property. Flood Angel® Flood Defender™ Barriers were used in a variety of bespoke sizes and fixings to fit various doorways and windows.  Flood Angel® Anti-Flood Airbricks and vent covers were also used.

All flood barriers fitted by UKFB are wet tested; EA Wales requested we apply this method to a handful of properties with Flood Defender™ Barriers installed.  Temporary bund walls were constructed with ply wood to demonstrate this process. Wet testing gave homeowners the chance to witness the effectiveness of these products in protecting their property and keeping flood water out.

FEEDBACK

Gareth Richards, Project Manager at EA Wales commented:

“The Communities of Capel Bangor and Penrhyncoch, Ceredgion, Mid Wales flooded in June 2012. 14 Properties received floodwater in their properties. The Environment Agency Wales decided that the most effective work would be to provide the communities with Flood Proofing products.

Following a brief tendering process UK Flood Barriers were awarded the contract to provide 22 properties with individual flood protection products.

On this project - from the tender process to the completion of the scheme I have found UK Flood Barriers to be a very professional company with clear communication.

A pre scheme meeting was arranged with the contracts manager – which resolved small issues at a property level and I met up with the surveyor on site to discuss any discrepancies. This communication resulted in the scheme running smoothly and being completed within the tight timescale.

The standard of the installation work was high and the  and the use of the water test ensured that the residents had confidence that their products would work in a flood situation.”
