Clifton is a small suburb in the City of York. Following regular heavy rainfall over the previous 7 years, Clifton had been the subject of flooding on a number of occasions. The start of 2000 saw the River Ouse rise to an astonishing 5.5m above its normal level, flooding hundreds of properties. Since then, flood defence measures have been put in place, however the threat of flooding is still present.
Clifton Medical Secure Unit is a new build property built on a flood plain. The building had to adhere to a number of regulations in order to reduce the risk of flooding to 1 in 1000 year event, therefore the overall shape and nature of the building has been designed to reflect these regulations and constraints.
A series of flood prevention measures were put into place during the design phase of the project including a wall surrounding the perimeter of the practice and increasing the height of the building. However, further flood mitigation requirements were later identified.
