THE PROBLEM

Clifton is a small suburb in the City of York. Following regular heavy rainfall over the previous 7 years, Clifton had been the subject of flooding on a number of occasions. The start of 2000 saw the River Ouse rise to an astonishing 5.5m above its normal level, flooding hundreds of properties. Since then, flood defence measures have been put in place, however the threat of flooding is still present.

Clifton Medical Secure Unit is a new build property built on a flood plain. The building had to adhere to a number of regulations in order to reduce the risk of flooding to 1 in 1000 year event, therefore the overall shape and nature of the building has been designed to reflect these regulations and constraints.

A series of flood prevention measures were put into place during the design phase of the project including a wall surrounding the perimeter of the practice and increasing the height of the building. However, further flood mitigation requirements were later identified.

THE SOLUTION

UKFB were contacted directly by Balfour Beatty, the main contractor for the project, to specify flood defence solutions for the new build. Measures were required to protect a number of different sized apertures to the building and UKFB were asked to design a solution.

After an initial survey took place it was determined the Flood Angel® Flood Defender™ Barrier was the ideal solution for the apertures, to provide effective flood mitigation to the practice.

There were 14 entrances and exits in total that required flood defence, varying in size, the Flood Angel® Flood Defender™ Barrier was the perfect solution as it is lightweight, easy to deploy and made to measure for each aperture. All barriers were installed into rails internally to each doorway. This fixing system was requested by the client so that the rails would always be in position, allowing the barriers to be quickly deployed an immediate flood scenario.
