THE PROBLEM

Built in the 1960’s, and situated on a bend of the River Wear, Durham Rowing Club first fell victim to flooding in the summer of 2009 when the river rose to its highest level ever recorded. Although flood warnings were issued, it was still not enough to save the clubhouse, flood waters submerged the club site and entered the building causing considerable damage to floor coverings and furnishings.

These images show the extent of flooding to the club and boat house following the floods of 2009. The River Wear burst its banks resulting in up to a meters worth of flood waters entering the car park and club house.

Recent heavy rainfall has threatened a repeat event, but fortunately the club has not flooded since. However, the River Wear is known for rising quickly, and with the constant threat of flooding the need for flood protection has been identified to prevent this costly incident happening again.

THE SOLUTION

UKFB were contacted by Durham Rowing Club and asked to survey and install flood mitigation measures to the clubhouse so that should such flood events happen again the club would be prepared.

UKFB visited site to conduct a survey to determine the most suitable products to use. It was identified that 10 Flood Angel® Flood Defender™ Barriers would be needed to protect various entrances around the clubhouse. Other products installed were Flood Angel® 160mm/110mm Non-Return Valves, Flood Angel® Weepholes and a supply of Flood Angel® Toilet Bungs were also provided. This project took 1 week to complete.

FEEDBACK

“In 2007 we underwent a £1m rebuild of our clubhouse facilities which was supposed to be constructed above the level of a 1 in 100 year flood. In July 2009 we were subjected to such a flood after 24 hours of unprecedented rainfall caused the River Wear to burst its bank and flood the building, despite the best efforts of the council, staff & members.

Since then we have been close to flooding on a further 3 occasions and in 2013 we sought advice from UKFB (and other flood prevention companies). We found the approach from UKFB very professional from the outset, taking time to understand the nature of the problems we faced and how our building operates.

We were impressed with the design of the products proposed and how discrete the installation would be when the barriers were not installed.

The installation was very a smooth process with minimal disruption and was carried out during operational hours in a safe and efficient manner.

As promised the installed products are very discrete and are  easy to put into place. We hope they will not be needed but are much more confident that we have the protection needed in the event of future flooding.”
