Flood Protection: Ripon Racecourse

A Flood Defender™ Barrier installed into rails protecting a sloped entrance to one of the onsite facilities.

Ripon Race Course in Boroughbride, Yorkshire, has been home to some of the most exciting races of the country for over 300 years. It’s exciting atmosphere and picturesque surroundings is what gives the course its nickname of ‘Yorkshires Garden Racecourse’ and is noted as the most intimate and attractive course in the country.

During September 2012 the racecourse was victim to flooding following torrential heavy rain. The racecourse had to end the season early after 40% of the track was left under flood waters

Ripon Racecourse contacted UKFB directly after deciding flood defence measures were required to help protect some of the onsite facilities. A survey was booked for the team to visit the race course to determine the most suitable products to install.

In total 41 Flood Angel® Flood Defender™ Barriers were specified for the course, these barriers would be installed using the most appropriate fixing systems depending on the aperture. Barriers were installed to help mitigate flooding to pubs, restaurants, betting shops and the toilet blocks onsite. Two barrier fixing systems were specified for use, barrier fitted into permanent rails and also the nutsert fixing into wooden door frame.
