Fareham Council

THE PROBLEM

Wallington is a village situated between Portsmouth and Southampton, part of the Borough of Fareham. Now a residential, affluent suburb, the village was once best known for a brewery and tannery as its main industries.

Wallington has been victim to flooding for hundreds of years due to high flow flood water from the river and urban drainage systems unable to cope. Recent floods that took place in 2007 and 2009 have in particular been the worst to hit the village. Torrential storms have caused the River Wallington to repeatedly burst its banks leaving residents with no option but to evacuate their homes, many only given a 45 minute warning to gather any personal belongings to take with them. It is claimed some locals had to abandon their cars and swim to safety as heavy rainfall continued to inundate the village. One resident reported the only way in and out of his house was through a window due to the level of water surrounding his home.

THE SOLUTION

Fareham Council recognised the need to take action and mitigate flooding to at risk properties, a competitive tender process was put together and UK Flood Barriers were awarded the project. The Council provided funding for flood measures to be put in place to 49 properties. UKFB conducted surveys to all properties to identify which products were required.

A range of products from the Flood Angel® range was installed, these included; bespoke Flood Defender™ Barriers used for doorways and windows, 110mm Non-Return Valves, Anti-Flood Airbricks, Anti-Flood Airbrick Covers and Waterstop, as well as repointing, sealing cable and service entry points, and internally Tanking Polymer between a party wall.

Due to the number of properties involved, the scheme was split into two phases, starting in January 2011 and completing in March 2011.

Severe flooding occurred again in December 2012 making national headlines across the country. This time residents were forced to leave their homes by the Environment Agency as a flood wall alongside the River Wallington developed cracks threatening to collapse and cause major flooding and disruption.  It was during this period UKFB’s flood mitigation measures were put to the test.

FEEDBACK

“Your company proved a hit for Wallington from the first site visit to the conclusion of the Project. I personally found the staff, from the initial individual survey (which was comprehensive and extremely well produced), to the tradesmen on site with their excellent and very helpful supervisors, right through to the excellent snagging teams who attended over and above, all to be a pleasure to liaise with, very helpful, and professional. Nothing was too much trouble.

The individually tailored protection kit was, after a few teething problems, of a good standard and fit for purpose. The village has had to respond to a couple of flooding threats, as seen on national TV and the kit has been successful.”
