UK Flood Barriers were invited to put proposals to BT Bell, Structural Engineers from Hexham, who had completed a flood risk assessment on behalf of _space architects and their client Northumberland County Council. Water Wall was chosen to protect the appliance bay’s front and rear entrances and 2 floodshields were installed to offer protection to the stations external doors.
The appliance bay also has a maintenance inspection pit which meant that it could not be left unprotected and allowed to flood. Six backwater valves were added to the existing drainage system to prevent back-surges of floodwater entering the building into toilets, kitchen and shower rooms. The work was carried out by Fred Mence Ltd, who were appointed by the Council’s Framework Construction Contractor GB Building Solutions, and supplied by local distributor of UK Flood Barrier products and systems, James Burrell Builders Merchants.
