Building the case for flood defences

Flood risk is a particular problem for the UK and it is anticipated that this phenomenon is going to be an increasing burden on our society in the coming years. The two primary causes are the unpredictable consequences of climate change resulting in increased severity and intensity of rainfall, and the impact of new developments which are taking place on floodplains, which are themselves at risk of flooding, and which increase the risk of flooding downstream.

New Research Linking

New research linking global warming to flooding in Britain, published last month (February) by Oxford University, undoubtedly added weight to the case for more flood defences in the UK. But it did not stop the Government announcing an eight per cent cut in its flood protection budget over the next four years. So what happens next; how can Britain best protect its buildings in the coming decade?

Over the past decade, the UK has experienced a significant increase in flooding due to a number of factors, including the effects of climate change and the impact of housing developments in flood risk areas. The government’s new housing strategy, announced last week, will inevitably lead to an increase in new homes being built in the UK, and whilst this scheme will help to revitalise the housing market, it is imperative that extra measures are taken into consideration in order to guarantee flood protection.
